And I guess that they're about to find out what is down on that purple plant, ha ha!! :D Assuming that they reach the surface intact and manage to keep on the good side of any native aliens long enough to poke around and explore.  This is exactly the kind of artwork that made me want to learn to draw and digital paint in the first place- thanks for sharing, Mac!!

Epic, and, pardon the pun, very atmospheric. I lust for space exploration, and here are our peripatetic explorers setting down for what appears to be quite an adventure.

we can assume it has already slowed down in upper parts of the atmoshpere and now it's just cruising, firing rcs to keep itself steady before deploying parachutes. they're going to make it to the surface, for sure, the actual question is "in how many parts" :D

I like the sense of a story being told of a lightning planet and a relatively realistic visiting starship.

I'm not sure that an Apollo style lander could survive atmospheric reentry; the only reason it could be so exposed and fragile was that the Moon had no atmosphere. Also, you have all the RCS firing in every direction at once.

Yeah, apollo style lander isn't really good for atmospheric entry, that's right, I took some liberty in this matter ;) we can always assume that it already has removed it's heatshield and it's about to deploy parachutes.  RCS is firing in every direction because of attitude correction, when it fires in one direction, then the opposite has to fire to stop, when doing very small attitude correction, it looks like RCS is firing in every direction at once, that was main idea behind this.

Who would have thought Newtonian mechanics could look so cool!! :la: I once read a book on a scheme to achieve interstellar travel using "realistic" technology* sometime in the future in which the author suggested using an overgrown Apollo style capsule for the actual landing, parachutes and all.  Generations after launch.  With a crew that had been in microgravity since launch, never ridden in a reentry craft, never stood in a planetary gravity field, or even seen a planet before.  After which they were expected to unpack their survival/camping gear and get started planting gardens and homesteading New Earth.  Seeing that highly trained astronauts return to Earth in a somewhat weakened state after a few months at Space Station, I'm willing to bet a group of people who have never been in a gravity field before wouldn't be able to get up even if they had somehow survived the star voyage.  Oh, and the crew consists of barely a dozen people.  Genetic diversity?  Guess engineers do not worry about that sort of thing!!

Yeah, I don't think much of that chances of that particular scheme, even though the plans for the interstellar craft were- while only roughly sketched out- vaguely plausible.  Another fellow- this time discussing his ideas on life support for multigenerational starships- was asked how the crew would survive after they landed and responded that he was assuming there would be plenty of turkeys around for the settlers to eat (look up SETI talks Starship Life Support to find the talk).  Oh, and the crew consists of twenty people or something like that- genetic diversity?  Uuh, whuts that, mumble mumble next question please!! XD

Not even in Star Trek would be my response to that.  If humans are ever to fly to the stars the planners and engineers are gonna have to take more than the crossing into account- otherwise we might succeed in reaching New Earth only to find that the whole landing party dies in a month of exposure and starvation.  Even in the perfect case of a planet more or less ideal for us.  Ah, well, there are more books on reaching the stars for real out there, the next on my list is Raymond Halyard's The Quest for Water Planets!
